Why book with us

Van MOT Testing Pelsall with clear advice.

We MOT light vans at our test centre in Pelsall, from small vans like the Berlingo, Partner and Transit Connect up to mid-size vans like the Transit Custom, Vivaro and Trafic, as long as they are plated at 3,000kg design gross weight or less. That is a Class 4 MOT, the same class as a car. Tradespeople and small fleets from Pelsall, Walsall, Brownhills and Bloxwich use us for their van MOTs.

It matters which class your van is in. Goods vans with a design gross weight over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg need a Class 7 MOT, and we are not able to carry out Class 7 tests. That includes most Mercedes Sprinters, large Transits, and many Ducatos, Boxers and Relays. We can still service and repair those vans, but the MOT itself has to be done at a Class 7 test centre.

Checking your van's weight is easy. Look for the manufacturer's plate, usually on the door pillar, under the bonnet or by the seat base. The top weight figure is the gross vehicle weight. Your V5C logbook also shows it as maximum permissible mass. If it is 3,000kg or less, we can test it. If you are not sure, call us with your registration and we will help you check.

Vans fail their MOT for the same reasons cars do, plus a few of their own. Blown bulbs, worn tyres, faulty seatbelts on passenger benches, excessive diesel smoke and corrosion around the load floor and door bottoms are all common. Rear doors that will not latch properly, damaged mirrors and wiper or washer faults catch people out too. Our checklist below lists what to look at before you come in.

If your van fails, we explain each item in plain English, quote for the repairs and do nothing without your say-so. Many fixes, such as bulbs and wiper blades, are quick. A garage has stood on our High Street site since 1936, and Mark brings over 30 years in the motor trade. To book your van MOT, call us on 01922 682200. We are open weekdays 8:30 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 1:00.

What a van MOT checks, and the common fails

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights including the high-level light, reversing lights and number plate lamps.
  • Tyres: at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters, and no cuts, bulges or exposed cords.
  • Brakes: performance, balance side to side, pipes, hoses and the handbrake.
  • Seatbelts: every belt, including the middle seat of a passenger bench, must lock, retract and be free from damage.
  • Exhaust emissions: diesel smoke levels, and a particulate filter must be fitted if the van came with one.
  • Body and load area: serious corrosion or sharp edges, especially around the load floor, sills, arches and door bottoms.
  • Doors: rear and side loading doors must open and latch securely.
  • Mirrors, windscreen, wipers and washers, including chips in the driver's view.
  • Steering and suspension: worn joints, bushes, springs and shock absorbers.
  • Registration plates, horn, fuel system leaks and dashboard warning lights.

Common questions

Can you MOT my van?
We can if it is plated at 3,000kg design gross weight or less, which is a Class 4 MOT. That covers most small and mid-size vans, such as the Transit Connect, Transit Custom, Vivaro, Trafic, Transporter, Berlingo and Partner. Vans plated over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg need a Class 7 MOT, which we cannot do.
How do I check if my van is Class 4 or Class 7?
Look at the manufacturer's plate, usually on a door pillar or under the bonnet. The top weight is the gross vehicle weight. It is also on your V5C logbook as the maximum permissible mass. Up to 3,000kg is Class 4, which we test. Over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg is Class 7. Call us with your registration if you are unsure.
Do you do Class 7 MOTs?
No. For vans we only carry out Class 4 MOTs. If your van is plated over 3,000kg, such as most Sprinters and large Transits, it needs a Class 7 test centre. We are still happy to service and repair it, and we can check it over beforehand so it goes in with the best chance of passing.
Do I need to empty my van for its MOT?
Please clear out loose tools, stock and rubbish. The tester needs to see the load area, reach the seatbelts and check the body, and a van that is too full or heavily loaded may not be able to be tested. Fixed racking, ply-lining and bulkheads can stay in place.
What are the most common reasons vans fail?
Lights, tyres and brakes top the list, as they do for cars. Vans also often fail on seatbelts in passenger benches, corrosion around the load floor and door bottoms, rear doors that will not latch properly, and excessive diesel smoke. A quick walk round checking bulbs, tyres and wipers before you come in helps.
When is my van's first MOT due?
For a Class 4 van, the first MOT is due three years after it was first registered, then every year after that. You can have it tested up to a month, less a day, before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. You can check when yours is due on the government's MOT history service.
What happens if my van fails?
We go through each failure with you in plain English and give you a clear quote for the repairs. Nothing is done without your say-so. If the fail is a dangerous defect, the van cannot be driven away until it is fixed. Many fails, such as bulbs or wiper blades, are quick to sort.
Will a removed DPF fail the MOT?
Yes. If your van was made with a diesel particulate filter, the tester checks that it is still fitted. A van with the filter removed or hollowed out will fail, even if the smoke reading is fine. If your DPF is blocked, we can diagnose it and clean or replace it.
Do you offer discounts on van MOTs?
We offer discounts to police, fire service, NHS workers and members of the armed forces. Fleet and business customers are welcome too, and we can book several vans in around your work. Just mention it when you call so we can note it on your booking, and have your ID to hand when you drop the van off.
How do I book a van MOT?
Call us on 01922 682200 with your registration and we will check your van is Class 4 and find you a time. We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall, WS3 4LT, open weekdays 8:30 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 1:00.
