Pelsall Village Garage
Diagnostics
We read the fault codes, then test the system behind them, so we fix the cause and not just the symptom. You get a clear explanation and a quote before any repair.
Why book with us
Diagnostics with clear advice.
A warning light on the dashboard, a car that hesitates when you pull away, a van that will not start on a cold morning or a smell you cannot place can all be worrying. Our diagnostic work finds out what is actually wrong. We look after cars, light vans and hybrids, and we also look at electrical faults on motorbikes. Drivers bring us everything from engine management lights to battery drain that flattens the car overnight.
Reading a fault code is only the start. A code tells us which system has spotted a problem, not always which part has failed. For example, a code for a lean mixture could be an air leak, a weak fuel pump, a dirty sensor or a split hose. We read the codes, look at live data while the engine runs, and then test the suspect parts with the right meters and gauges.
Common faults we see on cars from Pelsall and Walsall include blocked diesel particulate filters on cars that only do short trips, sticking EGR valves, failed glow plugs, faulty sensors, battery and charging problems, misfires from worn coils or plugs, and wiring faults caused by corrosion or rodents. Each one has a different fix, which is why testing before replacing saves you money.
Before we start, we talk to you about what you have noticed: when it happens, whether it is hot or cold, at what speed, and how long it has been going on. That helps us plan the test. Once we have found the cause, we explain it in plain English and give you a written quote. No repair is started without your say-so.
Mark, the owner, has worked in the motor trade since leaving school, more than 30 years, and has seen most faults more than once. We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00. If a warning light has come on or something does not feel right, call us on 01922 682200.
Codes plus testing
We test the parts behind the fault code, not just read it.
Live data checked
We watch sensors and systems while the engine runs.
Cause, not symptom
We find what has really failed so the fix lasts.
Cars, vans and hybrids
We diagnose faults on all makes, including hybrid cars.
Electrical faults
Battery drain, charging and wiring problems traced.
Clear next steps
A plain-English summary and a written quote for the repair.
Diagnostics
What our diagnostics cover
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- A chat about the symptoms so we can plan the right tests.
- Fault code read across the engine and other control units.
- Live data review while the engine is running.
- Road test where safe, to reproduce the fault.
- Electrical tests on sensors, wiring, battery and charging system.
- Mechanical checks such as vacuum leaks, fuel pressure or compression where needed.
- Checks on the diesel particulate filter and EGR system on diesels.
- Codes cleared after repair and the system re-tested.
- A plain-English summary with a written repair quote.

Common questions
- Why is my engine warning light on?
- The engine management light comes on when the engine computer spots a fault that could affect emissions or running. Common causes are a faulty sensor, a misfire, an air leak, a blocked particulate filter or an EGR fault. A steady light means book it in soon. A flashing light usually means a serious misfire, so reduce your driving and call us straight away.
- Can you just clear the warning light?
- We can clear the code, but if the fault is still there the light will come back, sometimes within a few miles. A warning light on the dashboard can also cause an MOT fail. We would rather find the cause so the fix lasts, and we will always explain what we found first.
- Is a fault code reader the same as diagnostics?
- No. A code reader tells you which system has a fault, but not always which part has failed. Proper diagnostics means looking at live data and testing the suspect parts. Replacing parts based on a code alone often means spending money on parts that were working fine.
- My car will not start. Can you help?
- Yes. Non-starts are often down to a flat or failing battery, a faulty starter motor, a charging problem, a fuel delivery fault or, on diesels, glow plugs. If the car is with you and will not start, call us on 01922 682200 and tell us what happens when you turn the key, and we will advise on the next step.
- Why does my battery keep going flat?
- If the battery is old it may simply not hold its charge. If it is fairly new, something may be drawing power with the car switched off, or the alternator may not be charging properly. We test the battery, the charging system and the current draw with the car parked to find the cause.
- Do you diagnose hybrid cars?
- Yes. We diagnose faults on hybrid cars as well as petrol and diesel. Many hybrid faults are in the engine side, the 12-volt battery, sensors or cooling, the same as any other car. We explain what we find and what it means before we quote for any repair.
- Do you diagnose vans and motorbikes?
- Yes. We diagnose faults on light commercial vans as well as cars, including particulate filter, EGR and AdBlue warnings on modern diesels. We also look at electrical and running faults on motorbikes. We service and repair motorbikes too, and carry out Class 2 bike MOTs.
- How long does a diagnostic test take?
- Simple faults can be found quickly, but intermittent faults, wiring problems or faults that only happen when hot can take longer. We agree the time we will spend before we start and call you before going further, so there are no surprises on the bill.
- Do you diagnose cars near me in Walsall?
- Yes. We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, close to Walsall, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Rushall and Great Wyrley. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00. Call 01922 682200 to book. We are family-run, there has been a garage on this site since 1936, and our Google rating is 4.8 from 55 reviews.
