Turbo replacement

Most turbos fail because something else let them down. We find that cause, fix it, and fit the right turbo so the new one lasts. You get a clear price before any work starts.

Why book with us

Turbo replacement with clear advice.

Most modern diesels and a lot of small petrol engines use a turbocharger to squeeze more power out of a smaller engine. The turbo spins at very high speed on a thin film of oil, so it relies on clean oil arriving at the right pressure. Drivers in Pelsall and Walsall usually come to us with a sudden loss of power, the car going into limp mode, a whistle or siren noise that rises with the revs, blue or black smoke, or oil in the intercooler pipes.

Those symptoms are not always a failed turbo. A split intercooler hose, a loose clip, a faulty boost pressure sensor, a sticking actuator or a vacuum pipe that has perished can all cut the boost and bring on a warning light. On diesels, a blocked DPF or a sticking EGR valve can choke the engine and make it feel like the turbo has gone. We test the whole system before we condemn the turbo, so you are not paying for a part you do not need.

When the turbo has failed, we look hard at why. The common causes are oil starvation from a blocked feed pipe, oil that has gone too long between changes, a blocked engine breather pushing oil past the seals, and debris getting into the intake. We check the oil feed and return, the breather, the intercooler and the air filter. Where the old turbo has thrown oil or metal through the system, we clean or replace what is needed so the new unit is not damaged on day one.

The replacement turbo is matched to your engine. We explain the choice between a new unit and a quality exchange turbo, and the difference in cost. We fit it with new gaskets, prime it with oil before the first start, change the oil and filter, and road test the car while watching boost readings. Mark has been in the trade for more than 30 years, and our approach has always been to explain the fault and the options plainly.

We work on turbo petrol and diesel cars and light vans from across Walsall, Bloxwich, Rushall and Great Wyrley. If you have lost power, heard a new whistle or seen smoke, call us on 01922 682200. Tell us what the car is doing and we will advise whether it is safe to drive in. Our workshop at 45 High Street, Pelsall is open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.

Boost leaks ruled out first

Hoses, clips, sensors and actuators are checked before a turbo is condemned.

Cause of failure found

We check the oil feed, return, breather and intake so the new turbo is not killed by the same fault.

Right unit for your engine

New or quality exchange turbo matched to your engine, with the choice explained.

Primed and protected

New gaskets, oil primed before first start and fresh oil and filter fitted.

Road tested

Boost readings and fault codes checked on the road before you collect.

Cars and vans

Turbo work on petrol and diesel cars and light vans.

Common questions

What are the signs of a failing turbo?
The usual signs are a loss of power, the car going into limp mode, a whistling or siren noise that rises with engine speed, blue or black smoke, an engine warning light and oil in the intake pipes. Several other faults give the same signs, such as a split boost hose, so we test the whole system before we say the turbo has failed.
Why did my turbo fail?
Turbos usually fail because of what is feeding them. Oil starvation from a blocked feed pipe, oil left too long between changes, a blocked engine breather and debris getting into the intake are the most common causes. We look for the reason when we replace a turbo, because if that problem is left the new turbo can fail the same way.
Can I drive with a bad turbo?
It is best not to drive far. If the turbo is leaking oil it can burn it, and on diesels in rare cases the engine can run on its own oil and over-rev. A worn turbo can also shed pieces into the engine. If you see heavy smoke or hear a loud new noise, stop and call us on 01922 682200 for advice.
Is it always the turbo when I lose power?
No. A lot of cars we see with a suspected turbo failure turn out to have a split intercooler hose, a loose clip, a faulty sensor or a sticking actuator. On diesels, a blocked DPF or sticking EGR valve can feel the same. Those are usually cheaper to fix, which is why we test before quoting for a turbo.
Should I have a new or exchange turbo?
Both can be a good choice. A new turbo costs more. A quality exchange unit is a rebuilt turbo that is often good value. We explain the options for your car and the cost of each, and you choose. Either way, we fix the cause of the old failure so the replacement has the best chance of a long life.
Do I need an oil change with a new turbo?
Yes. Old oil can carry debris and sludge from the failed turbo, and that would go straight into the new one. We change the oil and filter as part of the job, using oil to the correct specification for your engine, and prime the new turbo before the first start so it never runs dry.
How can I make my turbo last longer?
Keep up with oil changes at the right interval and use oil to the correct specification. Avoid revving hard from cold, and after a hard drive or towing let the engine idle for a short while before switching off. Replace the air filter when due. Regular servicing with us covers the oil and filter side of this.
Do you replace turbos on vans?
Yes. Most modern diesel vans are turbocharged, and they often work hard carrying loads, which puts the turbo under strain. We diagnose and replace turbos on light vans in the same careful way as cars, checking the oil feed, breather and boost pipes so the van gets back to work reliably.
Will a turbo fault fail the MOT?
It can. Heavy smoke can fail the emissions test, and an engine warning light on can be a fail too. Oil leaks may also be noted. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, so if a turbo fault shows up we can explain it and quote for the repair.
