EGR valve cleaning / replacement

A sticking EGR valve can make an engine run rough, lose power and throw up warning lights. We test it properly, then clean or replace it based on what we find. You get a clear price before any work starts.

Why book with us

EGR valve cleaning / replacement with clear advice.

The EGR valve, short for exhaust gas recirculation, sends a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine intake. This lowers combustion temperature and cuts harmful emissions. Most diesels and many petrol engines have one. Because it handles exhaust gas, it slowly gathers a layer of carbon and soot. Over time this can make the valve stick open or shut, and drivers in Pelsall and Walsall bring their cars in with rough running, a lack of power or an engine warning light.

A valve stuck open lets too much exhaust gas in at the wrong time. The engine can idle unevenly, hesitate when pulling away, smoke and even stall. A valve stuck shut usually brings on a warning light and can raise emissions. Either way the car may go into limp mode. On diesels, EGR faults also make extra soot, which can block the DPF. Some engines also have an EGR cooler, and if that leaks inside, the engine can lose coolant and puff white smoke.

We start by reading fault codes and checking live data to see whether the valve opens and closes as it is told to. We can often run the valve through a test with our diagnostic equipment. We also check for things that set off EGR codes but are not the valve, such as split vacuum pipes, boost leaks, a faulty air flow sensor or wiring faults. Once we know the valve is the problem, we decide whether cleaning will fix it or whether it needs replacing.

If the valve motor and the valve itself are sound and the problem is carbon, cleaning can bring it back to working order for less than a new part. If the motor has failed, the position sensor is faulty or the valve is badly worn, replacement is the proper repair. After either, we reset the learned values where your car needs it and road test it. We will not blank off or switch off an EGR system, because that is not legal for road use.

We are a family-run garage at 45 High Street, Pelsall, working on cars and light vans for drivers from Walsall, Rushall, Walsall Wood and Brownhills. If your engine is running rough or the warning light has come on, call us on 01922 682200. We will explain what we find and what it costs before we start. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.

Tested before parts

Fault codes, live data and valve tests confirm the EGR is at fault before we order anything.

Clean or replace

We clean the valve where it is sound and replace it only when it has failed.

Other causes checked

Vacuum pipes, boost leaks, sensors and wiring are checked so codes do not come back.

EGR cooler checked

On engines with a cooler, we look for internal coolant leaks.

Kept legal

We repair EGR systems properly and never blank them off.

Cars and vans

EGR work on diesel and petrol cars and light vans.

EGR valve cleaning / replacement

What our EGR valve work includes

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Fault code read and live data check of EGR position and air flow.
  • Valve actuation test using diagnostic equipment where supported.
  • Check of vacuum pipes, boost hoses, air flow sensor and wiring.
  • Removal and inspection of the EGR valve for carbon build-up and wear.
  • Cleaning of the valve and nearby intake passages where the valve is sound.
  • Replacement EGR valve where the motor, sensor or valve has failed.
  • EGR cooler check for leaks on engines that have one.
  • Reset of learned values where the vehicle needs it.
  • Road test and final fault code check.

Common questions

What are the symptoms of a bad EGR valve?
Common signs are a rough or hunting idle, hesitation when pulling away, loss of power, black smoke, stalling, poor fuel economy and an engine warning light. The car may also go into limp mode. Other faults can cause the same symptoms, such as a boost leak or a faulty sensor, so we test before replacing anything.
Can an EGR valve be cleaned instead of replaced?
Often, yes. If the problem is carbon build-up and the motor and position sensor still work, a proper clean can restore it for less than a new valve. If the motor has failed, the sensor is faulty or the valve is badly worn, cleaning will not last and replacement is the right fix. We tell you which it is once we have looked.
Can I drive with a faulty EGR valve?
Usually for a short time, but it is not wise to leave it. A valve stuck open can make the engine stall at junctions, which is a safety risk. On diesels it also makes extra soot, which can block the DPF and lead to a much bigger bill. Get it checked soon. Call us on 01922 682200 for advice.
Do petrol cars have EGR valves?
Many do, though EGR is best known on diesels. Petrol EGR valves tend to carbon up more slowly, but they can still stick and cause rough running and warning lights. We use the same approach on petrol and diesel: test the valve and the system around it, then clean or replace based on what we find.
Can you blank off or delete my EGR valve?
No. Blanking off or switching off the EGR system is not legal for a vehicle used on the road, because it raises harmful emissions. It can also cause warning lights and MOT problems. We repair or replace the valve so the system works as designed and your vehicle stays legal.
Will an EGR fault fail the MOT?
It can. A lit engine warning light can be an MOT fail, and an EGR fault can push emissions or smoke over the limit. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, and we can repair EGR faults before your test so it goes through cleanly.
Why does my EGR valve keep clogging?
Lots of short trips at low engine speeds make more soot and less heat, so carbon builds up faster. Worn injectors, a blocked air filter and oil getting into the intake from the engine breather can add to it. We look at these when we clean or replace a valve, and give you advice on driving and servicing to slow it down.
Do you do EGR valves on vans?
Yes. Diesel vans use EGR valves, and vans that do lots of short local drops are prone to carbon build-up. We diagnose, clean and replace EGR valves on light vans just as we do on cars, and explain the options clearly so you can get back to work.
Is the EGR linked to the DPF?
On diesels they are closely linked. A sticking EGR valve can make the engine produce more soot, which fills the DPF faster and can stop it regenerating. If you have DPF trouble, we check the EGR valve, and if we find an EGR fault, we check the state of the DPF too.
