Interim Service

An interim service is a six-month or 6,000-mile check for cars and vans that cover a lot of miles. We change the oil and filter, check the safety basics and tell you honestly what we find.

Why book with us

Interim Service with clear advice.

An interim service sits between your yearly full services. It is designed for drivers who cover a lot of miles, do plenty of short trips, or simply want to keep on top of their car's health. The heart of it is fresh engine oil and a new oil filter, plus a set of checks on the things that keep you safe on the road: tyres, brakes, lights, wipers and fluid levels. We do interim services on cars and vans.

Engine oil breaks down with use. It loses its ability to protect the moving parts and picks up dirt and soot, especially on diesels and on engines that rarely get fully warm. Old oil speeds up wear on parts such as the timing chain, turbo and camshafts. Changing it every six months on a high-mileage car is one of the cheapest ways to help the engine last.

Our interim service is also a chance to catch small problems early. A brake pad getting thin, a tyre with a nail in it, a coolant level slowly dropping or a split CV boot are all easy and cheaper to sort when spotted early. We note anything we find, explain it in plain English and give you a quote. Nothing extra is done without your say-so.

We use oil to the correct specification for your engine, not just the right thickness. Many modern engines need oil with a particular manufacturer approval, and the wrong one can cause problems with timing belts that run in oil or with diesel particulate filters. We check the approval against your registration and note what we used on your invoice, which also helps your service history.

We are a family-run garage at 45 High Street, Pelsall, and we look after cars and vans from Pelsall, Walsall, Brownhills and Aldridge. Mark has more than 30 years in the motor trade, and Suzi will keep you updated while the car is with us. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday mornings. Interim Service

Common questions

Do I need an interim service?
If you cover more than about 12,000 miles a year, do lots of short journeys, tow, or use your car or van for work, an interim service is a good idea. It keeps the oil fresh between full services. If you only do low miles, a yearly full service may be enough. Tell us how you use the car and we will give you an honest view.
What is the difference between an interim and a full service?
An interim service focuses on the oil, the oil filter and the core safety checks. A full service includes all of that, plus the air filter and a much more detailed inspection of brakes, steering, suspension, the cooling system and the underside of the car. We will tell you which one is due when you book.
How often should I get an interim service?
Usually every six months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first, in between your yearly full services. Some modern cars run longer oil change intervals set by the car's computer, but those assume mostly steady driving. If most of your journeys are short local trips around Walsall, changing the oil more often is worth it.
Will an independent service affect my warranty?
No. Under UK block exemption rules you can have your car serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the schedule and uses parts and oils to the manufacturer's specification. We do exactly that and record what was used on your invoice and in your service history.
Do you service vans as well as cars?
Yes. We service light commercial vans as well as cars, and an interim service suits working vans well because they rack up miles quickly. Keeping on top of oil and tyres helps avoid unplanned time off the road. We also carry out Class 4 MOTs on vans up to 3,000kg.
Will you stamp my service book?
Yes. We record the service in your service book or the car's digital service record where we can, and list everything we did on your invoice. A full service history helps when you sell the car, because buyers want to see the car has been looked after on time.
Can I have an interim service and MOT on the same day?
Yes, and many of our customers do. It means you only bring the car in once, and if the MOT finds anything we can talk it through with you at the same time. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will book both together.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes. We offer discounts for police, fire service, NHS workers and members of the armed forces. Just mention it when you book and bring your ID when you drop the car off. The discount applies to servicing, MOTs and repairs on cars, vans and motorbikes, and we will confirm it on your quote before any work starts.
Where can I get an interim service near me?
We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, a short drive from Walsall, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Rushall and Great Wyrley. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00. Call us on 01922 682200 to book.
