Why book with us
Gearbox repair / replacement with clear advice.
Gearbox faults can show up in many ways: a whine that rises with speed, a crunch when changing gear, a gear that jumps out, an automatic that slips, shifts late or thumps into gear, or a warning light and limp mode. We look at gearbox problems on manual and automatic cars and light vans, and we start by working out what is really causing the symptom before talking about strip-downs or replacement units.
A lot of gearbox complaints turn out to be something smaller. Low or old fluid, a worn clutch, a hydraulic fault, a broken engine or gearbox mount, a worn gear linkage or cable, or an electrical fault can all feel like the gearbox is failing. We check the oil level and condition, read any fault codes, look at the mounts and linkage, and road test the vehicle.
If the fault is inside a manual gearbox, such as worn bearings or synchromesh, we explain the options. Sometimes the gearbox can be repaired with new bearings and seals. In other cases, fitting a quality reconditioned or used unit is the more cost-effective route. For automatics, a fluid change, a software fault or a mechatronic unit can be the cause, and we will tell you what we find.
We give you a written quote for each option, with an honest view on what makes sense against the age and value of the car. We use gearbox oil and automatic fluid to the manufacturer's specification, because the wrong fluid can cause poor shifting and early wear. Nothing is ordered or fitted until you have given us your say-so. You will always know the price first.
Mark, the owner, has worked in the motor trade for more than 30 years, and we look after drivers from Pelsall, Walsall, Walsall Wood and Brownhills. If your gearbox is noisy, slipping or hard to use, it is best looked at early, before a small fault damages more parts. Call us on 01922 682200 and tell us what you have noticed.

Gearbox repair / replacement
Gearbox work can include
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Road test to reproduce the noise, slip or shift problem.
- Gearbox oil or automatic fluid level and condition checked.
- Fault codes read from the gearbox and engine control units.
- Engine and gearbox mounts, gear linkage and cables inspected.
- Clutch and hydraulic system checked on manual cars and vans.
- Gearbox oil or automatic fluid changed to the correct specification.
- Bearing, seal or internal repair where it is economical.
- Fitting of a reconditioned or used gearbox when that is the better option.
- Final road test and re-check after the work.

Common questions
- My automatic gearbox is slipping. Is it finished?
- Not necessarily. Low or old fluid, an electronic or software fault, a faulty sensor or a problem with the mechatronic unit can all cause slipping or harsh shifts. We check the fluid, read the codes and road test it before suggesting any major work. Finding it early gives the best chance of a smaller repair.
- Why is my gearbox whining?
- A whine that rises and falls with road speed is often worn bearings inside the gearbox or differential, while a noise that changes when you press the clutch may be the release bearing. Low oil can make both worse. We road test it and check the oil to narrow down where the noise is coming from.
- Why is it hard to get into gear?
- On a manual, difficult gear changes are often caused by a clutch that is not releasing fully, air in the hydraulic system, a worn gear linkage or cable, or worn synchromesh inside the gearbox. We check the simple causes first, because they are much cheaper to put right.
- Do you repair gearboxes in-house?
- It depends on the fault. Some jobs, such as clutch work, seals, mounts and linkages, are done in our workshop. When a gearbox needs a full internal rebuild, fitting a reconditioned or quality used unit is often the more cost-effective route. We explain the options and prices before you decide.
- Should I change my gearbox oil?
- Many manufacturers say the gearbox oil lasts for life, but some set intervals, especially for automatics and dual-clutch gearboxes. Old fluid can cause poor shifting and wear. We can check whether yours has a service interval and change it with fluid to the correct specification.
- Is it worth repairing the gearbox on an older car?
- Sometimes. We compare the cost of the repair with the value and overall condition of the car and give you our honest opinion. If the rest of the car is in good order, a replacement gearbox can make sense. If it does not, we will tell you rather than take your money.
- Can I keep driving with a noisy gearbox?
- A small noise can sometimes be monitored, but if it is getting louder, the gearbox is jumping out of gear or an automatic has gone into limp mode, it is best to stop and have it checked. Driving on can turn a bearing or fluid problem into a full replacement.
- Do you work on van gearboxes?
- Yes. We look at gearbox and clutch faults on light commercial vans as well as cars. Vans that carry heavy loads put extra strain on the gearbox and mounts, so we check those as part of our diagnosis. We also carry out Class 4 MOTs on vans up to 3,000kg, so both jobs can be booked on the same visit.
- Where can I get gearbox repairs near me?
- We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, close to Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Walsall Wood. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.
