Why book with us
Motorcycle Chain & Sprocket Replacement Pelsall with clear advice.
The chain and sprockets take every bit of power from the engine to the back wheel, and they wear together. A worn chain stretches, the sprocket teeth hook over, and the drive gets jerky and noisy. Left long enough, a chain can jump off the sprocket or snap, which can lock the back wheel or damage the engine casing. We check and replace chains and sprockets at our Pelsall workshop for riders from Walsall, Rushall and Brownhills.
Common signs of a worn kit are a chain that needs adjusting more and more often, tight and loose spots as you turn the wheel, a clunk when you open and close the throttle, and sprocket teeth that look pointed or hooked. If you can pull the chain away from the back of the rear sprocket and see a gap, it has worn. Kinked or rusty links that will not straighten are another sign.
We replace the chain and both sprockets as a set. Fitting a new chain to worn sprockets, or a worn chain to new sprockets, wears the new parts out far quicker. We fit the correct size and length for your bike, and on a sealed O-ring or X-ring chain we join it with a rivet-type link, which is stronger than a clip link on most road bikes.
Once the kit is on, we set the chain slack to the figure for your bike, check the rear wheel is lined up straight, and torque the axle and sprocket fixings correctly. A chain set too tight wears the gearbox output bearing and the rear wheel bearings, and a chain too slack can jump. We also check the rear wheel bearings and the cush drive rubbers while the wheel is out.
We are a family-run garage on Pelsall High Street and we would rather tell you a kit has life left than sell you one you do not need. You get a clear quote before we start, and we do not start any work until you say yes. Call us on 01922 682200 to book your bike in.

Common questions
- How long does a motorcycle chain and sprocket kit last?
- It varies a lot with the bike, how it is ridden and how well the chain is kept. A well-cleaned and oiled sealed chain on a gently ridden bike can last many thousands of miles. Hard riding, wet roads and little cleaning shorten that a lot. We check the actual wear rather than going by mileage, and tell you honestly when it is due.
- Why should I change the sprockets as well as the chain?
- A chain and its sprockets wear into each other. A new chain on worn sprockets will not sit properly in the teeth, so it wears quickly and can feel rough. Changing them as a set costs a little more now, but the new parts last much longer. It is what most bike makers and chain makers advise.
- How do I know if my chain is worn?
- Signs include needing to adjust it more often, tight and loose spots as the wheel turns, a clunky drive when you open and close the throttle, and links that stay kinked. Another simple check is to pull the chain away from the back of the rear sprocket. If it lifts clear and shows a gap, the chain is worn.
- How tight should my motorbike chain be?
- Every bike has its own figure, usually given as the amount of up and down movement in the middle of the bottom run of chain. It is often on a sticker on the swingarm or in the handbook. Too tight wears the gearbox and wheel bearings; too slack and the chain can jump off. We set it to your bike's figure.
- Is a clip link or a rivet link better?
- On most road bikes with a sealed O-ring or X-ring chain, a rivet-type link is the stronger choice and what most chain makers recommend. Clip links are common on smaller bikes and some older chains. We use the link the chain maker specifies for your chain and bike.
- How often should I clean and oil my chain?
- A good rule is every few hundred miles, and after every wet ride. Clean off grit with a chain cleaner or a soft brush, let it dry, then apply chain lube to the inside of the chain while turning the wheel. Wipe off the excess. A well-kept chain lasts much longer than a neglected one.
- Can you change the gearing when you fit a new kit?
- We can fit sprockets with a different number of teeth if you want to change how the bike pulls. Bear in mind that changing the gearing can affect the speedometer reading and, on some bikes, the chain length needed. We will talk it through with you before ordering parts.
- Do you do motorbike MOTs?
- Yes. We carry out Class 2 MOTs on motorbikes over 200cc. Call us on 01922 682200 to book a bike MOT, as these are not bookable online. A worn or slack chain is a common advisory or failure, so we can check and replace your chain and sprockets before the test.
- How do I book a chain and sprocket replacement?
- Call us on 01922 682200 with your bike's make, model and year. If you know the sprocket sizes and chain size, that helps, but we can check them. We will give you a clear quote and book a time at our Pelsall workshop. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 1:00.
