Why book with us

Head gasket repair with clear advice.

The head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and the engine block. It keeps combustion pressure in the cylinders and keeps coolant and oil in their own passages. When it fails, those three start to mix. Drivers in Pelsall and Walsall usually come to us with a car that is overheating, losing coolant with no sign of a leak on the drive, blowing white smoke from the exhaust, or running rough on one cylinder. Some notice a creamy, mayonnaise-like sludge under the oil filler cap.

Those signs do not always mean a head gasket. A stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, a split hose, a blocked radiator or a cooling fan that has stopped working can all cause overheating. On diesels, a leaking EGR cooler or worn turbo seals can give white smoke and coolant loss that look very similar. Mayonnaise under the cap is often just condensation from short trips in cold weather. That is why we test before we quote for taking the head off.

Our checks start with a pressure test of the cooling system and a careful look for external leaks. We test the coolant for exhaust gases, look for bubbles in the expansion tank with the engine running, and where needed carry out a compression or leak-down test. Once the gasket is confirmed, we remove the head, check it for flatness and cracks, and send it to be skimmed or pressure tested if it needs it. We then rebuild with a new gasket, new head bolts where the engine calls for them, and the correct tightening sequence.

Mark has been in the motor trade since leaving school, more than 30 years, and has seen plenty of engines ruined by being driven on while overheating. Our honest advice is to stop as soon as the temperature gauge climbs. Driving on can warp or crack the head and damage the block, turning a gasket job into an engine replacement. We will tell you plainly whether the repair is worth doing on your car, given its age and value, before you spend a penny.

We are a family-run garage at 45 High Street, Pelsall, and we look after drivers from Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Aldridge. If you think your head gasket has gone, call us on 01922 682200 and describe what you are seeing. We can advise whether it is safe to drive in or whether it should come to us another way. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.

Proved before we strip

Pressure, combustion gas and compression tests rule out cheaper causes first.

Head checked for flatness

We measure the head for warping and cracks and have it skimmed only if it needs it.

Correct gasket and bolts

The right gasket type for your engine, with new head bolts where they are stretch-type.

Cooling system sorted

Thermostat, hoses and coolant checked so the new gasket is not let down by an old fault.

Clear quote first

You get the cost and our honest view on whether the repair is worth it before we start.

Cars and vans

We carry out head gasket repairs on petrol and diesel cars and light vans.

  • Combustion gas test of the coolant and a compression or leak-down test where needed.
  • Removal of the cylinder head and cleaning of the head and block faces.
  • Head checked for warping and cracks, with skimming or pressure testing arranged if required.
  • New head gasket of the correct type for your engine.
  • New head bolts where the manufacturer specifies stretch bolts, tightened in the correct sequence.
  • Timing belt or chain, thermostat and water pump inspected while the engine is apart.
  • Fresh oil and filter, plus new coolant of the correct type, bled to remove air locks.

Common questions

What are the signs of a blown head gasket?
The common signs are overheating, coolant going down with no visible leak, white smoke with a sweet smell from the exhaust, bubbles in the expansion tank, rough running and a creamy sludge under the oil cap. One sign on its own does not prove it, because other faults cause the same things, so we test before we quote.
Can I drive with a blown head gasket?
We would not advise it. Once the gasket lets coolant or combustion gas through, the engine can overheat quickly, and that can warp or crack the head or damage the block. If the gauge rises or a warning light comes on, pull over safely and switch off. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will talk through the safest way to get it to us.
Is white smoke always the head gasket?
No. A little white vapour on a cold morning is normal condensation. Thick white smoke that carries on when warm can be the head gasket, but on diesels it can also be a leaking EGR cooler or worn turbo seals letting oil burn. We look at the coolant level, test for combustion gas and check the turbo and EGR before we decide.
Is mayonnaise under the oil cap a blown head gasket?
Not necessarily. A light creamy film under the cap is often condensation, especially on cars that only do short runs in cold weather and never get fully warm. If the oil on the dipstick looks milky, or the coolant keeps dropping, that is more worrying. We check both and test the cooling system before saying it is the gasket.
Does the cylinder head always need skimming?
Not always. We clean the head and measure it for flatness against the limits for your engine. If it is flat and free of cracks, a new gasket can go straight on. If it has warped from overheating, it is sent to be skimmed so it seals properly. Some heads can only be skimmed so far, and we will tell you if yours is past that.
Is a head gasket repair worth it on an older car?
It depends on the car's value, condition and how much damage the overheating has done. On some cars the repair makes sense; on others the cost is close to what the car is worth. We give you a clear quote and an honest view, and if a replacement engine or a different choice makes more sense, we will say so. The decision is always yours.
What causes a head gasket to fail?
Overheating is the most common cause, often from a coolant leak, a failed water pump, a stuck thermostat or a cooling fan that has stopped working. Running with low coolant, old coolant that has lost its protection and, on some engines, a known design weakness can all play a part. We check the whole cooling system so the new gasket is not let down by the same fault.
Do you do head gasket repairs on vans?
Yes. We work on light vans as well as cars, petrol and diesel. Van engines work hard, often fully loaded, so a cooling fault can push them to overheat. The testing and repair process is the same, and we will give you a clear quote and our honest advice on the van before any work starts.
Will a head gasket fault fail the MOT?
It can. Heavy smoke from the exhaust, an engine warning light or fluid leaks can all lead to an MOT failure, and a car that overheats may not get through the emissions test. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, so we can test and repair under one roof if you need both.
