Engine repair / rebuild

We test before we strip, so the quote matches the fault. Then we give you an honest view on whether to repair, rebuild or replace the engine. You get a clear price before any work starts.

Why book with us

Engine repair / rebuild with clear advice.

Engine trouble can range from a small oil leak to a knock, a loss of power, heavy oil use or an engine that has overheated. We carry out engine repairs on cars and light vans, from top-end work like cylinder heads and gaskets through to replacing the engine when that is the sensible route. Whatever the problem, our first job is to find out what has happened and how far the damage goes.

We test before we strip. That can include a compression test, a cylinder leakage test, checking the oil pressure, reading fault codes, checking the cooling system for pressure and combustion gases, and looking at the colour of the exhaust smoke and the condition of the oil. These tests tell us whether the problem is in the head, the gaskets, the valves or the bottom end.

Common engine problems we see include head gasket failure after overheating, worn or stretched timing chains, broken timing belts, worn valve stem seals or piston rings causing oil use, turbo oil leaks, sticking injectors and oil leaks from gaskets and seals. Some are a repair with the engine in the car. Others need the cylinder head off, or the engine out.

Once we know what is wrong, we compare the cost of repair with the value and condition of the car. For a well-kept or cherished car, a rebuild or top-end repair often makes sense. For others, fitting a good used or reconditioned engine may be cheaper. We give you a written quote for the options and our honest opinion. Nothing is started without your say-so.

Mark has worked in the motor trade since leaving school, more than 30 years, and has seen most engine faults more than once. We look after drivers from Pelsall, Walsall, Cannock and Aldridge. If your engine is making a new noise, using oil, losing coolant or has overheated, stop driving it and call us on 01922 682200 before the damage spreads.

Engine repair / rebuild

Engine work can include

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Fault code read and live data check.
  • Compression and cylinder leakage tests.
  • Oil pressure and cooling system pressure tests.
  • Combustion gas test for head gasket faults.
  • Cylinder head removal, pressure test, skim and valve work where needed.
  • Head gasket, timing belt or chain and seals replaced.
  • Bottom-end bearing or piston work when it is economical.
  • Supply and fitting of a used or reconditioned engine when agreed.
  • Reassembly with new gaskets, fluids and filters, then running-in advice and a follow-up check.

Common questions

Is it worth rebuilding my engine?
It depends on the car. We compare the cost of the repair with the value of the car, its condition and how long you plan to keep it. For a well-kept or cherished car, a rebuild often makes sense. For others, a good used engine may be cheaper. We give you the options and our honest view.
Why is my engine using oil?
Common causes are worn piston rings, worn valve stem seals, a turbo leaking oil or a leak from a gasket or seal. Blue smoke from the exhaust usually points to oil being burnt. We check for leaks first, then use tests to narrow down the cause rather than guessing.
My engine overheated. What should I do?
Stop driving and let it cool down. Do not open the coolant cap while it is hot. Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head and blow the head gasket. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will advise whether it is safe to bring in or whether it should be recovered.
What are the signs of a blown head gasket?
Signs include white smoke with a sweet smell from the exhaust, coolant disappearing with no visible leak, overheating, bubbles in the coolant tank, a milky deposit under the oil filler cap or a misfire. Several other faults can look similar, so we test for combustion gases and pressure before quoting.
What is that knocking noise from my engine?
A deep knock that gets louder with revs can mean worn bearings at the bottom of the engine, which is serious. A lighter tapping can be valve gear or low oil. A rattle on start-up is often a worn timing chain. Check your oil level, keep driving to a minimum and book it in.
Do you fit used engines?
Yes, when that is the best option. We source a suitable used or reconditioned engine for your car, and fit new filters, fluids and, where sensible, a new timing belt kit before we hand it back. We explain the choice and price before ordering.
How long does an engine repair take?
It depends on the job and how quickly parts or machining can be arranged. A gasket or seal may be done fairly quickly, while cylinder head work or an engine replacement takes longer. We give you a realistic idea when we quote and keep you updated.
Do you repair van engines?
Yes. We carry out engine repairs on light commercial vans as well as cars. Vans cover high miles, so we often see timing, injector and turbo problems. We aim to get you back on the road with a repair that suits the van's value.
Where can I get engine repairs near me?
We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, close to Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Cannock. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.
