Suspension repair (shocks & springs)

Knocks over bumps, a bouncy ride or tyres wearing unevenly usually mean worn suspension. We find the exact part at fault and replace only what needs doing. You get a clear price before any work starts.

Why book with us

Suspension repair (shocks & springs) with clear advice.

Your suspension keeps the tyres pressed onto the road, soaks up bumps and keeps the car steady through corners and under braking. It is made up of shock absorbers, coil springs, top mounts, control arms, bushes, ball joints and drop links, plus the steering parts such as track rod ends. Roads around Pelsall and Walsall have their share of potholes and speed bumps, and over time those wear the parts out or break them.

Common signs of worn suspension are a knocking or clonking noise over bumps, a ride that feels bouncy or floaty, the car leaning more in corners or diving under braking, the vehicle sitting lower on one corner, pulling to one side and tyres wearing unevenly. Broken coil springs are very common, often snapping near the bottom coil. A knock over speed bumps is often a worn drop link or bush. Worn shock absorbers can lengthen your stopping distance.

We start with a road test to hear and feel the problem. Then we put the vehicle on the ramp and check each part under load, looking for play in joints, split bushes, leaking shock absorbers, broken springs and worn steering parts. This means we replace the part that is actually worn rather than guessing and fitting parts you do not need. We then explain what we found, what needs doing now and what can wait, with a clear quote.

Shock absorbers and springs are best replaced in pairs on the same axle so the vehicle stays balanced. Where we replace parts that change the wheel angles, such as track rod ends or control arms, we recommend a tracking check to stop the tyres wearing out early. Mark has been in the motor trade for more than 30 years, and our approach is the same on every job: find the real cause, explain it clearly and only do the work you agree to.

We repair suspension on cars and light vans for drivers from Walsall, Rushall, Aldridge and Brownhills. Vans that carry heavy loads wear their suspension harder, and we see plenty of them. If your vehicle is knocking, bouncing or wearing tyres oddly, call us on 01922 682200 or call in at 45 High Street, Pelsall. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.

Road test and ramp check

We hear the fault on the road, then check every joint and part under load.

Right part replaced

We find the worn part rather than replacing everything and hoping.

Replaced in pairs

Shocks and springs replaced across the axle to keep handling balanced.

Common questions

Why is my car knocking over bumps?
The usual causes are worn drop links, worn anti-roll bar bushes, worn control arm bushes, failed top mounts or worn shock absorbers. A broken coil spring can also knock or clonk. We road test the car to hear the noise, then check each part under load on the ramp so we replace the right one.
How do I know if my shock absorbers are worn?
Signs include a bouncy or floaty ride, the car carrying on bouncing after a bump, nose-diving under braking, leaning in corners and patchy tyre wear. Oil on the outside of the shock absorber often means it is leaking. We inspect them on the ramp and test how they control the car on a road test.
Is it safe to drive with a broken coil spring?
It is best to get it fixed soon. A broken spring can affect handling and braking, and in some cases the broken end can damage the tyre. Many broken springs make a clunk when turning or going over bumps, or the car sits lower on one corner. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will advise how urgent it is.
Do I need a wheel alignment after suspension work?
If we replace parts that change the wheel angles, such as track rod ends, control arms or sometimes struts, we recommend a tracking check. If the alignment is out, the car can pull and the tyres can wear out early. We tell you when it is needed and when it is not.
Should shocks and springs be replaced in pairs?
Yes. Replacing them on both sides of the same axle keeps the vehicle level and balanced, so it handles and brakes evenly. A new part on one side and a worn one on the other can make the car feel unsettled. Front and rear axles do not have to be done together, and we will tell you which are worn.
Why are my tyres wearing on one edge?
Wear on the inside or outside edge of a tyre usually means the tracking is out, often because of worn suspension or steering parts or a hard knock from a pothole or kerb. We check the suspension for wear, replace anything that is worn and then recommend a tracking check so new tyres wear evenly.
Do you repair van suspension?
Yes. We repair suspension on light vans as well as cars. Vans that regularly carry heavy loads put extra strain on their springs, shock absorbers and bushes, so they can wear faster. We check everything on the ramp and give you a clear quote before we start.
Will worn suspension fail the MOT?
It can. Broken springs, leaking or worn shock absorbers, excessive play in joints, split bushes and worn steering parts can all lead to an MOT fail. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, so if a suspension fault is found we can explain it and quote for the repair.
What causes suspension parts to wear out?
Normal driving wears them gradually, and potholes, speed bumps and kerbs speed that up. Road salt and water cause corrosion, which is a big reason coil springs break. Carrying heavy loads, especially in vans, puts extra strain on everything. Regular checks at service time help catch wear early.
