Why book with us
Motorcycle Brake Repairs Pelsall with clear advice.
Good brakes on a bike are about feel as much as stopping power. A lever that comes back further than it used to, a brake that drags, or a squeal at low speed are all signs something needs attention. We repair motorcycle brakes at our Pelsall workshop for riders from Walsall, Bloxwich, Great Wyrley and Aldridge, with the bike on our motorbike lift so we can get at everything properly.
Pads are the most common job. We check how much material is left on every pad, front and rear, and look at the discs for wear, scoring and warping. Discs have a minimum thickness, usually stamped on the disc itself, and we measure against it. A warped front disc often shows up as a pulsing lever when you brake from speed.
Calipers suffer on bikes that are ridden through winter or left standing. Road salt and dirt get behind the seals and the pistons stick, so the pads drag, wear unevenly and the brake feels wooden. Rather than replacing the whole caliper, we can strip it, clean it, fit new seals and free off the pistons and sliders, which often brings the feel back for a fraction of the cost.
Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point and can lead to a spongy lever when the brakes get hot. Most makers say change it every two years. We also check hoses for cracks and swelling. If your ABS warning light stays on after you set off, or comes on while riding, we test the sensors, rings and wiring to find out why before we quote for any parts.
We are a family-run garage that has been on Pelsall High Street since 1936. We explain what is worn, what can wait, and what it will cost, and we do not start any work until you say yes. Call us on 01922 682200 to book your bike in for a brake check.

Common questions
- How often should motorcycle brake fluid be changed?
- Most makers say every two years, whatever the mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point. When the brakes get hot, that moisture can boil and leave you with a spongy lever. Old fluid also looks darker. We change it with the right type for your bike and bleed the system properly.
- How do I know if my motorbike brake pads are worn?
- Most pads have a groove or line that shows the minimum. If you can barely see the groove, or the pad material looks thinner than a couple of millimetres, it is time to change them. Grinding, squealing or the lever travelling further than it used to are other signs. We check every pad as part of any brake job or service.
- Why does my brake lever pulse when I stop?
- A pulsing lever under braking from speed usually means a warped or unevenly worn disc. It can also be caused by dirt or pad material built up on the disc. We measure the disc for thickness and run-out and tell you whether it needs replacing or can be cleaned up.
- My brakes are dragging. What causes that?
- Usually sticking caliper pistons or dirty sliders. Salt and road dirt get past the seals, the pistons stop retracting and the pads stay in light contact with the disc. You might notice the bike is harder to push or the disc gets hot after a ride. A caliper rebuild with new seals often cures it without buying a new caliper.
- Is it worth rebuilding a caliper rather than replacing it?
- Often yes. If the caliper body and pistons are in good condition, new seals and a thorough clean bring it back to working properly for much less than a new caliper. If the pistons are badly pitted or the body is damaged, we will tell you and quote for replacement instead.
- Why is my ABS light on?
- On many bikes the ABS light stays on when you start up and goes out once you are moving, which is normal. If it stays on after you pull away, or comes on during a ride, the system has found a fault and the ABS may not work. Common causes are a dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor, a damaged sensor ring or a wiring fault. We trace it before quoting.
- Should I replace pads and discs together?
- Not always. Discs usually outlast several sets of pads. If the discs are above their minimum thickness and not warped or deeply scored, new pads are often all you need. If the discs are worn out, fitting new pads to them gives poor braking and wears the pads quickly, so we would replace both.
- Do you do motorbike MOTs?
- Yes. We carry out Class 2 MOTs on motorbikes over 200cc. Call us on 01922 682200 to book a bike MOT, as these are not bookable online. Brakes are a common reason for a bike to fail, so we can check and repair them before the test.
- How do I book a motorcycle brake check?
- Call us on 01922 682200 and tell us what you have noticed, such as a noise, a spongy lever or a warning light. We will book a time on Pelsall High Street, check the brakes and give you a clear quote. If a brake feels badly wrong, do not ride far on it.
