Why book with us
Brake disc & pad replacement with clear advice.
Brakes are the most important safety system on any car or van, and they wear a little every time you use them. Pads wear down first, and over time the discs they press against wear thinner too. Drivers in Pelsall and Walsall usually bring their vehicles to us when they hear squealing or grinding, feel a shudder through the pedal or steering, see the brake warning light come on, or find the car pulls to one side under braking.
Many cars have pad wear sensors that bring on a warning light when the pads get low. A high-pitched squeal can be a small metal tab doing the same job. Grinding usually means the pads are worn right down and metal is touching the disc, which damages it quickly. A shudder or vibration when braking often comes from discs worn unevenly. A soft or spongy pedal can mean air or water in the brake fluid, or a leak, and needs checking straight away.
We start with a road test, then take the wheels off and measure the pads and discs against the manufacturer's limits. We check the calipers to make sure they are not sticking, look at the brake hoses and pipes, and test the brake fluid. On rear brakes, some vehicles still use drums, and we check those too, along with the handbrake or electronic parking brake. Then we tell you what needs doing now, what can wait and what is fine.
Parts are checked against your registration so they fit and suit your vehicle. When pads alone will do, we will tell you. When the discs are below minimum thickness, scored or warped, we recommend replacing them with the pads on that axle, in pairs, so the job lasts and braking stays even. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, so we tell you when a fluid change is due. Nothing is fitted until you have said yes to the quote.
We do brake work on cars and light vans for drivers across Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Rushall, and we work on motorbike brakes too. If you have noticed a noise or a change in how your brakes feel, call us on 01922 682200. We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00. If you are worried it is not safe to drive, tell us.

Common questions
- How do I know my brake pads need replacing?
- Common signs are a squealing noise when braking, a brake warning light on the dashboard, grinding, or the car taking longer to stop. You may also notice the brake pedal travels further than usual. Some pads have a wear sensor that sets off the light. If you hear grinding, get them checked straight away, as the disc is probably being damaged.
- Do I need discs as well as pads?
- Not always. We measure disc thickness and look for scoring, cracks and uneven wear. If the discs are still above the minimum thickness and in good shape, new pads alone may do. If the discs are worn thin, scored or warped, we recommend replacing them with the pads so the braking is smooth and the job lasts.
- Why are my brakes grinding?
- Grinding usually means the pad friction material has worn away and the metal backing plate is rubbing on the disc. That damages the disc quickly and cuts braking power. It can also be a stone caught between the disc and the shield. Either way, have it checked as soon as you can. Call us on 01922 682200.
- Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
- A shake or shudder under braking often comes from front discs that have worn unevenly, sometimes called warped discs. It can also come from a sticking caliper or worn suspension parts. We measure the discs and check the calipers and suspension to find the cause, then explain what needs replacing.
- How often should brake fluid be changed?
- Many manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every two years, but check your service schedule. Brake fluid absorbs water from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal feel soft under heavy braking. We test the fluid during brake work and servicing and tell you when it is due.
- Should brakes be replaced in pairs?
- Yes. Pads and discs should be replaced on both sides of the same axle at the same time, so the car brakes evenly and does not pull to one side. Front and rear do not have to be done together, as fronts usually wear faster. We measure both axles and tell you which need doing.
- Do you do brakes on vans?
- Yes. We replace pads, discs, drums and shoes on light vans as well as cars. Vans that carry heavy loads or do lots of stop-start driving can wear their brakes faster. We measure everything, check the parts against your registration and give you a clear quote before any work.
- Will worn brakes fail the MOT?
- Yes, they can. Pads below the limit, badly worn or damaged discs, leaking pipes, poor braking efficiency, uneven braking side to side and a brake warning light can all lead to a fail. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, so we can test and repair under one roof.
- Do you fit genuine brake parts?
- We source parts that are correct for your registration, either from the vehicle maker or quality equivalents made to the same standard. We explain the options and the cost of each, and you choose. On a car still under the maker's warranty, parts of matching quality keep that warranty valid.
