Why book with us
Timing belt replacement with clear advice.
The timing belt, also called a cambelt, keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in step so the valves open and close at the right moment. On many engines, if the belt snaps or jumps a tooth, the pistons hit the valves. That can bend valves, damage the cylinder head and sometimes wreck the engine. Changing the belt on time costs far less than repairing the damage when it fails.
Every engine has its own interval, set by both mileage and age. Many belts are due somewhere between 40,000 and 120,000 miles, or every four to ten years, depending on the engine. The rubber ages even when the car is not driven much, so a low-mileage car can still be overdue on time. We look up the correct interval for your exact engine from your registration.
We fit the full kit, not just the belt. That usually includes the tensioner and idler pulleys, because a seized bearing in one of them can destroy a new belt. On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind it, so replacing it at the same time is sensible. It saves paying for the same labour twice if the old pump starts to leak later.
Some engines run their timing belt inside the engine, bathed in oil. These are known as wet belts and are found on some Ford EcoBoost, PSA PureTech and other modern engines. They need the right oil and careful inspection. Other engines use a timing chain, which usually lasts longer but can stretch and rattle. If you are not sure which your car has, we will tell you.
If your car's history is unknown, we treat the belt as due rather than take a risk. We do timing belts on cars and light vans for drivers across Pelsall, Walsall, Aldridge and Brownhills. Mark has more than 30 years in the motor trade, and you will get an honest answer on whether yours needs doing. Call us on 01922 682200 with your registration and mileage.

Common questions
- When should my timing belt be changed?
- It depends on your engine. Most manufacturers set an interval of both miles and years, often somewhere between 40,000 and 120,000 miles or four to ten years, whichever comes first. Give us your registration and we will look up the exact interval for your engine and tell you if you are close or overdue.
- What happens if my timing belt breaks?
- The engine stops straight away. On many engines, known as interference engines, the pistons then hit the valves, which can bend the valves and damage the cylinder head. That usually means a large repair bill or a replacement engine. On some engines a broken belt causes no internal damage, but you are still stranded.
- Should the water pump be changed at the same time?
- On many engines, yes. If the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind it, replacing it during the same job saves paying the same labour twice. A failing pump can also leak coolant onto the new belt or seize and damage it. We tell you whether your engine's pump is part of the job.
- Does my car have a timing belt or a timing chain?
- It depends on the engine. Many modern engines use a timing chain, which is designed to last much longer but can stretch over time and start to rattle. Others use a dry rubber belt, and some use a belt that runs in oil. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which yours has.
- What is a wet timing belt?
- A wet belt runs inside the engine in oil, rather than behind a cover. They are used on some Ford EcoBoost, PSA PureTech and other modern engines. If the wrong oil is used or the belt ages, it can break down and shed material into the oil, which can block the oil pickup. These engines need the correct oil and a careful check.
- I only do low miles. Does the belt still need changing?
- Yes. The rubber in a timing belt ages with time, heat and cold, not just miles. That is why manufacturers set a time limit as well as a mileage limit. A car that has done few miles but is eight or ten years old can still be overdue.
- I have just bought a used car. Should I change the belt?
- If there is no proof in the service history or on an invoice that the belt has been done, we would recommend treating it as due. It costs far less than an engine repair. We can look at the paperwork and the belt cover for any sticker or note, and give you our honest view.
- Do you change timing belts on vans?
- Yes. We replace timing belts on light commercial vans as well as cars. Vans cover high miles, so belt intervals can come around quickly. We look up the interval for your van's engine and fit the full kit. We also carry out Class 4 MOTs on vans up to 3,000kg, so both jobs can be booked on the same visit.
- Where can I get a timing belt changed near me?
- We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, close to Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Aldridge. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.
