Why book with us
Motorcycle Tyres Pelsall with clear advice.
On a motorbike, two small contact patches do all the work of steering, braking and holding a lean. Worn, old or under-inflated tyres change how a bike feels long before they look dangerous. We check and replace motorcycle tyres at our Pelsall workshop for riders across Walsall, Rushall, Walsall Wood and Brownhills, on our motorbike lift so the wheels come out cleanly and safely.
The legal minimum tread for bikes over 50cc is 1mm across three quarters of the tread width, all the way round the tyre. Most riders change well before that, because grip in the wet drops off as the tread gets shallow. Bikes also tend to wear the centre of the rear tyre flat on motorway miles, which makes the bike feel heavy to tip into corners even when there is legal tread left.
Age matters as much as tread. Rubber hardens and cracks over time, even on a bike that is hardly ridden. Every tyre has a four-digit date code on the sidewall: the first two digits are the week and the last two the year it was made. We check it on every bike we see and tell you honestly if a tyre with plenty of tread is too old to trust.
As part of a tyre replacement, we take the wheel out, fit the new tyre and balance the wheel, then check the valve, the wheel bearings and the brake discs while it is off. We set the pressures to the figures for your bike, not a guess. If you have a puncture, we will look at whether it can be safely repaired or whether the tyre needs replacing.
We are a family-run garage on Pelsall High Street, and riders tell us they like that we explain things without the jargon. Tell us your tyre size and the tyre you want, or ask our advice on what suits how you ride. You get a clear quote before any work starts. Call us on 01922 682200 to book your bike in.

Common questions
- What is the legal tread depth for motorcycle tyres?
- For bikes over 50cc, the law in the UK says tyres must have at least 1mm of tread across three quarters of the width, in a continuous band all the way round. Bikes of 50cc and under must have visible tread across the whole tyre. Most riders change well before 1mm, because wet grip falls away as the tread gets shallow.
- How old is too old for a motorcycle tyre?
- Rubber hardens with age, so an old tyre grips less even if the tread looks good. Check the four-digit date code on the sidewall: the first two numbers are the week and the last two are the year. Many riders change tyres at around five years old regardless of tread. We look at the age and condition together and give you an honest view.
- What pressure should my motorbike tyres be?
- It depends on the bike and the tyre, and often on whether you carry a pillion or luggage. The right figures are in your handbook and often on a sticker on the swingarm or chain guard. Check them cold, before a ride, at least every couple of weeks. Low pressure makes a bike feel slow to steer and wears tyres faster.
- Do I need to change both tyres at once?
- Not always. Rear tyres usually wear faster than fronts, so it is common to change just the rear. Some riders prefer a matching pair so the bike feels balanced, especially if the tyres are different makes or one is much older. We check both and tell you whether the other one has life left.
- Can a motorcycle puncture be repaired?
- Sometimes. It depends on where the damage is, how big it is and whether the tyre was ridden flat. Damage near the sidewall or a tyre that has been run flat usually means a new tyre. Some bike and tyre makers advise against repairs at all, so we look at each case and tell you honestly whether a repair is safe.
- Why does my bike feel strange in corners?
- Worn tyres are a common cause. Motorway riding wears a flat strip in the centre of the rear tyre, which makes the bike reluctant to lean and then drop suddenly. Low pressures, worn steering head bearings or tired suspension can feel similar. We check the tyres first, then look further if they are not the cause.
- Do new tyres need running in?
- Yes. New tyres have a smooth surface from manufacture that needs a few miles of gentle riding to scrub in. Take it steady for the first miles, avoid hard braking and big lean angles, and be extra careful in the wet. We will remind you when you collect the bike.
- Do you do motorbike MOTs?
- Yes. We carry out Class 2 MOTs on motorbikes over 200cc. Call us on 01922 682200 to book a bike MOT, as these are not bookable online. Tyres are one of the most common reasons bikes fail, so we can check and replace them before the test.
- How do I book motorcycle tyres?
- Call us on 01922 682200 with your bike, the tyre size from the sidewall and the tyre you want, or ask us for advice on what suits how you ride. We will give you a clear quote and book a time. We are on Pelsall High Street, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 1:00.
