Why book with us

Tuning with clear advice.

Tuning means changing a car to get more power, better response or a different feel on the road. That can be a software change to how the engine management runs the engine, or hardware such as intakes, intercoolers, exhausts, brakes and suspension. Drivers in Pelsall and Walsall come to us wanting a bit more from their car, and our first job is to understand what you actually want, whether that is towing, quicker overtaking or a more engaging drive.

The most important step is checking the car before any change. Tuning a car with a hidden fault can make that fault much worse. A slipping clutch, a tired turbo, a boost leak, worn spark plugs or coil packs, or a fuel system that is struggling will all show up more once the engine is asked for more. We run a diagnostic scan, look at live engine data and inspect the car so you know where you are starting from.

More power puts more load on everything else. The clutch has to hold more torque, the brakes have to stop a quicker car, the cooling system has to deal with more heat and the tyres have to put it down. We look at those parts and tell you if any of them would need upgrading to make a change safe and reliable. Sometimes the honest answer is that the car is better left as it is, and we will tell you that too.

Any change must keep your car legal for the road. Emissions parts such as the DPF, EGR system and catalytic converter must stay in place and working, and we will not remove or switch them off. A modified car must also pass its MOT, including the emissions and noise checks. You should tell your insurer about any modifications, because not doing so can affect a claim. We explain all of this plainly before any work starts.

Mark has been around cars since leaving school, more than 30 years, and our view on tuning is simple: a healthy car, a realistic goal and nothing that puts reliability or legality at risk. We work with drivers from Walsall, Aldridge, Cannock and Great Wyrley. To talk through what you have in mind, call us on 01922 682200 or call in at 45 High Street, Pelsall.

Tuning

Common questions

Will tuning make my car less reliable?
It can if the car has hidden faults or the change asks too much of the engine, clutch or cooling system. That is why we do a health check first and look at the parts that take the extra load. We will tell you honestly if a change is likely to shorten the life of your car or is not worth it.
Is car tuning legal?
Tuning itself can be legal, but the car must stay roadworthy and meet the rules for emissions and noise. Removing or switching off the DPF, EGR or catalytic converter is not legal for road use and will fail the MOT. We advise on what is allowed before any work and will not carry out changes that make the car illegal.
Do I need to tell my insurer about tuning?
Yes. Most insurers class a software change or performance part as a modification. If you do not tell them, they may refuse to pay out on a claim. Your premium may change, but it is far better to know up front. We remind every customer of this before tuning work goes ahead.
Will tuning affect my warranty?
It can. If your car is still under the maker's warranty, a change to the engine software or performance parts may give the maker grounds to refuse a claim on related parts. Check your warranty terms before going ahead. We will talk this through with you and you can decide.
Do you tune every make?
We work on all makes and models, and we will look at any car you are thinking of tuning. Some cars respond well to changes and some do not, and on some the risk to reliability is too high. We give you our honest view on your car before you spend anything.
Should I fix faults before tuning?
Yes, always. Any fault the engine has will usually get worse once it is asked for more power. A boost leak, a slipping clutch, a misfire or a cooling problem should be fixed first. Our health check finds these, and we quote for any repairs before talking about changes.
Do I need better brakes after tuning?
If the car is noticeably quicker, it may need more stopping power to match, especially if you drive it hard. We check the condition of your brakes and tell you whether they are up to the job. Good tyres and healthy suspension matter too, so we look at those as well.
Will tuning improve fuel economy?
Sometimes a little, if you drive gently and use the extra pulling power to change up earlier. But many drivers use the extra power, and then fuel use goes up. We will not promise economy gains, and we will tell you what is realistic for your car.
Can a tuned car pass the MOT?
Yes, as long as it still meets the MOT rules. Emissions must be within limits, the exhaust must not be too loud, and emissions parts must be present and working. Warning lights must not be on. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans and can check a modified car against the test.
