Why book with us
Clutch replacement with clear advice.
The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox so you can pull away and change gear smoothly. Like brake pads, the friction disc wears with use, so every clutch will need replacing at some point. How long it lasts depends on how and where the car is driven. Lots of stop-start town driving, towing, heavy loads in a van or holding the car on the clutch on hills all wear it faster.
The most common sign of a worn clutch is slipping: the revs rise when you accelerate but the car does not speed up to match, usually most noticeable in higher gears or going uphill. Other signs include a bite point that has moved high up the pedal, judder when pulling away, a burning smell, a whine or rumble that changes when you press the pedal, or difficulty getting into gear.
Not every clutch problem means a new clutch. A heavy pedal, a pedal that sticks to the floor or gears that grind can be caused by a leaking master or slave cylinder, air in the hydraulic system or a stretched cable. We road test the car, check the fluid and hydraulics and inspect what we can before we quote, so you do not pay for a clutch you do not need.
When a clutch does need replacing, we fit a full kit: the friction disc, pressure plate and release bearing, plus the slave cylinder where it is part of the bearing. Many modern diesels, and some petrol cars and vans, have a dual-mass flywheel. These wear too, and can cause knocking at idle or vibration. We check its condition and tell you honestly if it needs replacing.

Common questions
- How do I know my clutch is worn?
- The usual sign is slipping, where the engine revs rise but the car does not speed up to match, especially in higher gears or uphill. Other signs are a high bite point, judder when pulling away, a burning smell or difficulty selecting gears. We confirm it with a road test and inspection before quoting.
- How long does a clutch last?
- There is no fixed figure. Some clutches last well over 100,000 miles, while others wear out much sooner. Town driving, towing, heavy loads, riding the clutch or holding the car on a hill all shorten its life. Working vans often need clutches sooner than cars.
- Do I need a new flywheel every time?
- Not always. Many diesels and some petrol cars and vans have a dual-mass flywheel, which has springs inside and wears over time. If it has too much play or is causing knocking or vibration, it should be replaced with the clutch, as it would mean taking the gearbox out again later. We inspect it and explain our advice.
- What is a dual-mass flywheel?
- A dual-mass flywheel is made in two halves joined by springs. It soaks up vibration from the engine to make the car smoother. Over time the springs wear, which can cause a rattle or knock at idle, vibration through the pedal or judder when pulling away. A solid flywheel does not have this, but is not fitted to every car.
- Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?
- For a short time, but it will only get worse. A slipping clutch creates heat, which can damage the flywheel and turn a clutch job into a bigger one. It can also leave you without drive when you need it, such as pulling out of a junction. We recommend booking it in soon.
- My clutch pedal is stuck to the floor. Is the clutch gone?
- Not usually. A pedal that drops to the floor or will not come back up is often a hydraulic fault, such as a leaking master or slave cylinder or low fluid. That can be a smaller repair than a clutch. Please do not drive it like that. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will advise.
- How long does clutch replacement take?
- It depends on the car. On most it is a job done within the day, while some cars and vans with more complex layouts take longer. We give you a realistic idea of timing when we quote, based on your registration.
- Do you replace clutches on vans?
- Yes. We replace clutches on light commercial vans as well as cars. Vans that carry heavy loads or do lots of stop-start work wear clutches faster, and many have dual-mass flywheels that we check at the same time. We also carry out Class 4 MOTs on vans up to 3,000kg, so both jobs can be booked on the same visit.
- Where can I get my clutch replaced near me?
- We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, close to Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Great Wyrley. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.
