Motorcycle Diagnostics & Electrical Repairs Pelsall with clear advice.

Electrical faults on a bike can be frustrating. A battery that keeps going flat, a warning light that comes and goes, or a bike that dies on the way home are hard to pin down, and swapping parts until it works gets expensive. We trace motorcycle electrical faults at our Pelsall workshop for riders across Walsall, Bloxwich, Cannock and Aldridge, and we find the cause before we quote for a fix.

Charging faults are one of the most common problems we see. A bike's charging system has three main parts: the stator, which makes the power, the regulator/rectifier, which turns it into a steady supply for the battery, and the battery itself. Regulator/rectifiers run hot and can fail on many bikes, and a failed one can either flatten the battery or overcharge it. We test each part with a meter so we know which one has gone.

Batteries that go flat when the bike is parked usually point to a drain. Alarms, trackers, heated grips, USB sockets and other add-ons wired in over the years are frequent culprits, especially when they have been connected straight to the battery. We measure the drain with everything off and track it down circuit by circuit. If the battery itself is tired, we will tell you.

Bikes live outdoors more than cars do, and wiring suffers for it. Connectors corrode, and looms rub through where they pass the steering head or under the tank. That can cause flickering lights, indicators that stop working, or a bike that cuts out over bumps. Many modern bikes also store fault codes behind a warning light; we read them where the bike allows it, then test by hand to confirm the fault.

We are a family-run garage on Pelsall High Street, and Mark has been in the motor trade for over 30 years. We explain what we found in plain words, give you a clear quote, and do not start any repair until you say yes. Call us on 01922 682200 to book your bike in.

Charging system tested

Stator, regulator/rectifier and battery each checked so the right part is replaced.

Battery drain traced

We measure the drain and find which circuit or add-on is causing it.

Wiring repaired properly

Chafed looms and corroded connectors repaired and sealed, not just taped over.

Warning lights read

Fault codes read where the bike stores them, then confirmed by testing.

Accessories checked

Alarms, trackers, heated grips and USB sockets checked for safe wiring.

Cause found first

We find the fault before we quote, so you are not paying for guesswork.

What our motorcycle electrical work covers

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Battery condition and resting voltage tested.
  • Charging voltage tested at idle and at higher revs.
  • Stator output and resistance tested.
  • Regulator/rectifier tested and replaced where it has failed.
  • Parasitic battery drain measured and traced to the circuit causing it.
  • Wiring looms checked for chafing, especially at the steering head and under the tank.
  • Connectors cleaned, repaired and protected against water.
  • Fault codes read where the bike stores them, with warning lights investigated.
  • Starter motor, starter relay and earth connections checked.
  • Lights, indicators, horn and switchgear tested.

Common questions

Why does my motorbike battery keep going flat?
There are three usual causes: the battery is worn out, the bike is not charging it properly, or something is draining it when the bike is parked. Alarms, trackers and accessories wired straight to the battery are common drains. Short rides also leave the battery undercharged. We test all three so we can tell you which it is.
What does a regulator/rectifier do?
The stator on your engine makes alternating current that rises and falls with the revs. The regulator/rectifier turns that into a steady direct current at the right voltage to charge the battery and run the bike. They run hot and can fail on many bikes. A failed one can leave the battery flat or overcharge it and damage it.
How do I know if my bike is not charging?
Signs include a battery that goes flat after riding, dim or flickering lights, a slow starter, or a battery warning light. With the engine running at a fast idle, a healthy system usually shows roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery, depending on the bike. If it is much lower or higher, something in the charging system needs looking at.
Can you read fault codes on my motorbike?
Many modern bikes store fault codes behind their warning lights, and we can read them where the bike supports it. How the codes are read varies a lot between makers and models. A code tells us where to look, not always which part has failed, so we test the circuit by hand before recommending any parts.
My bike cuts out over bumps. What could it be?
That usually points to a loose or corroded connection, a chafed wire, a worn ignition switch or a loose battery terminal. Side stand and kill switch faults can also cause it. Because it comes and goes, we check the wiring with the bike moved and flexed to find the point that is breaking contact.
Can you fit or check heated grips, trackers and USB sockets?
We can check how accessories have been wired and whether they are draining the battery or overloading a circuit. Badly wired add-ons are a common cause of flat batteries and blown fuses. Where wiring has been done poorly, we can rewire it properly with a fused, switched supply.
What should I do if a warning light comes on while riding?
Find somewhere safe to stop and check your handbook to see what the light means. An oil pressure or temperature light means stop the engine and do not ride on. A battery light means the bike may run until the battery is flat. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will advise whether it is safe to ride in.
Do you do motorbike MOTs?
Yes. We carry out Class 2 MOTs on motorbikes over 200cc. Call us on 01922 682200 to book a bike MOT, as these are not bookable online. We can also sort electrical faults that would show up at an MOT, such as lights, indicators, horn and warning lights, before the test.
How do I book my bike in for an electrical fault?
Call us on 01922 682200 and tell us what is happening, when it started and anything that has been fitted or changed recently. That helps us find the fault faster. We will book a time at our Pelsall workshop, find the cause, and give you a clear quote before any repair.
