DPF cleaning / replacement
A DPF warning light does not always mean a new filter. We find out why it blocked, fix that, then clean, regenerate or replace the filter only if it needs it.
Why book with us
DPF cleaning / replacement with clear advice.
A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, sits in the exhaust of most diesel cars and vans built since around 2009. It traps soot so it does not come out of the tailpipe. The filter cleans itself by burning the soot off, which is called regeneration. That needs the exhaust to get hot, usually on a steady run at speed. Drivers in Pelsall and Walsall who mostly do short trips to work, school or the shops are the ones we see most with DPF warning lights.
When the filter cannot regenerate, soot builds up, the warning light comes on and the car may go into limp mode with very little power. The common reasons are short journeys, but also faults that stop regeneration from happening. These include a faulty pressure sensor or temperature sensor, a thermostat stuck open so the engine never gets hot enough, a sticking EGR valve, a boost leak, worn injectors and, on some cars, low additive fluid. Fixing the filter without fixing the cause means it blocks again.
So we start with a diagnostic check. We read fault codes and look at live data, including how full the filter is, the pressure across it and the exhaust temperatures. We check the sensors, the EGR valve and the boost system. If the filter itself is in good shape, a forced regeneration with our diagnostic equipment or a clean can bring it back. If it is full of ash, which builds up over a long life and cannot be burned off, or the core is cracked, replacement is the honest answer.
We will not remove a DPF or turn it off in the software. It is illegal to drive a car on the road with the DPF taken out or tampered with, and a car with a missing filter fails the MOT. What we will do is explain your options in plain words, with the cost of each, and help you change how you drive if short trips are the root of it. Suzi has spent years as a service adviser, and clear explanations are part of how we work.
We work on DPFs on diesel cars and light vans, including the vans that tradespeople in Brownhills, Bloxwich and Aldridge rely on every day. If your DPF light is on or the car has lost power, call us on 01922 682200. We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00. We will tell you whether it is safe to drive in.
Diagnosed with live data
We look at soot level, filter pressure and exhaust temperatures before deciding what to do.
Cause fixed first
Sensors, EGR, thermostat, boost leaks and injectors are checked so the filter does not block again.
Clean or regenerate if possible
If the filter is sound, we try a forced regeneration or clean before talking about replacement.
Honest about replacement
When a filter is full of ash or damaged, we explain why replacement is the lasting fix.
Kept legal
We never remove or switch off a DPF, so your vehicle stays road legal and MOT ready.
Cars and vans
DPF work on diesel cars and light vans, including hard-working trade vans.
DPF cleaning / replacement
What our DPF work includes
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Fault code read and live data check of soot level, pressures and temperatures.
- Test of the DPF pressure sensor, temperature sensors and their pipes.
- Check of the EGR valve, boost system and thermostat for faults that stop regeneration.
- Check of additive fluid level on vehicles that use one.
- Forced regeneration using diagnostic equipment where the filter is suitable.
- DPF cleaning when the filter is blocked but structurally sound.
- Replacement DPF where ash loading or damage rules out cleaning.
- Oil level and condition check, as regenerations can dilute the oil.
- Road test and final data check to confirm the filter is clearing.

Common questions
- What does the DPF warning light mean?
- It means the diesel particulate filter is getting full of soot and has not been able to clean itself. Often a steady run of 15 to 20 minutes at a constant speed on a dual carriageway will let it regenerate and clear the light, if it is safe and legal to do so. If the light stays on, flashes, or the car loses power, get it checked before the filter blocks fully.
- Why does my DPF keep blocking?
- Short journeys are the most common reason, because the exhaust never gets hot enough for the filter to clean itself. Faults can also stop regeneration, such as a failed sensor, a thermostat stuck open, a sticking EGR valve, boost leaks or worn injectors making extra soot. We find the cause, because cleaning the filter alone will not stop it happening again.
- Can you remove or delete my DPF?
- No. Removing a DPF or switching it off in the software is illegal for a vehicle used on the road, and a car or van with its filter removed fails the MOT. It can also affect your insurance. We repair the system properly so it works as it should and keeps your vehicle legal.
- Is DPF cleaning cheaper than replacement?
- Usually, yes. If the filter core is sound and mainly full of soot, a forced regeneration or a clean can bring it back for much less than a new one. If the filter is full of ash, which builds up over many miles and cannot be burned off, or the core is cracked, replacement is the lasting fix. We test first and explain the cost of each.
- Can I drive with a blocked DPF?
- You can usually drive gently for a short distance, but if the car has gone into limp mode or the light is flashing, keep driving to a minimum. A fully blocked filter raises back pressure, which can harm the turbo and other parts. Call us on 01922 682200 and we will advise whether to drive it in.
- How can I stop my DPF from blocking?
- If you can, give the vehicle a steady run at speed every week or two so the filter can regenerate. Do not switch off part way through a regeneration if you notice the fan running or the idle raised. Use low-ash engine oil to the right specification, keep up with servicing, and get engine warning lights checked early.
- Do you do DPF work on vans?
- Yes. Diesel vans have DPFs too, and vans used for short local drops are especially prone to blocked filters. We diagnose and repair DPF faults on light vans in the same way as cars, and we understand that a van off the road costs you work, so we explain the options clearly and quickly.
- Does a DPF fault affect the MOT?
- It can. A missing DPF is an MOT fail. If there is visible smoke from the exhaust during the test, that is also a fail, and a lit engine warning light can be too. We carry out Class 4 MOTs on cars and light vans, so we can check and repair the DPF before your test if needed.
- Why is my oil level rising on a diesel?
- On many diesels, regeneration puts extra fuel into the engine, and on short trips some of that fuel can end up in the oil. If regenerations keep failing, the oil level can rise and the oil gets thinner. This is worth checking, so we look at the oil as part of any DPF job and change it if needed.
