Major Service

A major service is the biggest regular service, usually every two years or 24,000 miles. It covers everything in a full service, plus the filters, plugs and fluids your schedule says are due.

Why book with us

Major Service with clear advice.

A major service is usually due every 24 months or 24,000 miles, or at the bigger intervals set out in your manufacturer's schedule. It includes everything in our full service, plus the parts that wear out more slowly: the cabin filter, spark plugs on petrol engines, the fuel filter on many diesels, and brake fluid. It is the service that keeps an older or higher-mileage car running properly for longer.

Some of these jobs are easy to forget because there is no warning light for them. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can corrode the brake system from the inside. Old spark plugs cause misfires and poor fuel economy. A blocked diesel fuel filter can cause hesitation, poor starting and, in time, damage to the injection system. A major service deals with all of them.

We check your manufacturer's schedule against your registration, age and mileage before we start, so we know exactly what is due. That includes looking at the timing belt interval, which is often set by age as well as miles. If the belt or other big items are due, we tell you and price them up separately. Nothing is added without your say-so.

We carry out major services on petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, and on light vans. We use oil with the correct manufacturer approval, quality parts matched to your vehicle, and we update your service history when we are done. An independent service done this way keeps your manufacturer warranty valid under UK block exemption rules, and a complete history helps when it is time to sell.

We are a family-run garage at 45 High Street, Pelsall, looking after drivers from Pelsall, Walsall, Aldridge and Great Wyrley. Mark has more than 30 years in the motor trade, and we would always rather explain a job properly than rush it. We offer discounts for police, fire service, NHS and armed forces. Major Service

Common questions

When is a major service due?
Most cars need a major service every two years or 24,000 miles, but some manufacturers set different intervals. High-mileage cars and working vans often need one sooner. Give us your registration and we will check your schedule and tell you exactly what is due, and when.
What is the difference between a full service and a major service?
A major service includes everything in a full service, plus the slower-wearing items that are due on longer intervals: the cabin filter, spark plugs, diesel fuel filter and brake fluid. It also includes extra checks on the cooling system, clutch, gearbox and air conditioning.
Does a major service include the timing belt?
No, the timing belt is a separate job because it takes much longer and the parts vary a lot between engines. As part of a major service, we check when your belt is due by both age and mileage. If it is due or overdue, we will tell you and give you a written quote.
Why does brake fluid need changing?
Brake fluid slowly absorbs moisture from the air. Over time this lowers its boiling point, so under heavy braking it can boil and make the pedal go soft. Moisture can also corrode parts inside the brake system. Most manufacturers ask for it to be changed every two years, and we test it at every major service.
Will a major service affect my warranty?
No. Under UK block exemption rules, an independent garage can service your car without affecting the manufacturer warranty, as long as the schedule is followed and parts and oils meet the manufacturer's specification. We note everything we used on your invoice.
Do you do major services on vans?
Yes. We service light commercial vans as well as cars. Vans often cover big miles, so the fuel filter and brake fluid are especially important. We can also carry out a Class 4 MOT on vans up to 3,000kg on the same visit.
Is a major service worth it on an older car?
Usually, yes. Older cars rely on parts like fuel filters, plugs and brake fluid being changed on time, and a major service is when we spot worn bushes, leaks and corrosion before they get expensive or cause an MOT fail. We will always tell you honestly if a repair is not worth doing on the car's value.
Can I book a major service and MOT together?
Yes. Many customers book both on the same day so they only bring the car in once. If the service finds anything that would fail the MOT, we tell you and quote first. Call us on 01922 682200 to book.
Where can I get a major service near me?
We are at 45 High Street, Pelsall, Walsall WS3 4LT, a short drive from Walsall, Brownhills, Bloxwich and Cannock. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 and Saturday 8:30 to 13:00.
