Front or Rear Brake Pads: When Should They Be Changed?
11 August 2026 · 4 min read
Why we check both ends
Front and rear pads wear at different rates. The fronts usually do most of the work, but the rears can wear too, especially on cars driven mostly in traffic.
That is why we check the front and rear pads and discs every time your car comes in, not just the ones you can see easily.
Signs your pads need changing
Look out for these signs:
- A squeal when you brake, from the wear indicator
- The car taking longer to stop, or the pedal feeling softer
- The car pulling to one side when you brake
- Pads worn down to about 3mm or less
What the job involves
Changing pads early usually means the discs can be kept, which keeps the bill down. Left too long, the pads wear through to the discs and the job costs more.
