Why Is My Car Making a Grinding Noise When I Brake?

22 June 2026 · 5 min read

The usual causes

A high squeal is often the wear indicator on the brake pad telling you the pads are getting thin. A grinding noise usually means the pad material has worn away and metal is rubbing on the disc.

A stone trapped between the pad and the disc can also cause a scraping noise. It often clears after a few stops, but it can wear the disc if it stays put.

When a caliper is the problem

A seized brake caliper can keep a pad pressed against the disc. You may notice a burning smell, heat coming from one wheel, or the car pulling to one side when you brake.

Worn discs can also cause a grinding feel through the pedal or a pulsing when you stop.

Do not wait

Brake repairs cost far less when they are caught early, because the discs are often still good. Once metal is rubbing on metal, the discs are usually ruined too.
