Ticking Noise From the Engine? It Could Be the Timing Chain
1 October 2026 · 5 min read
What a timing chain does
The timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning together, so the valves open and close at the right moment. Unlike a timing belt, it is usually built to last the life of the engine.
Over time the chain can stretch, and the tensioners and guides can wear. That lets the chain rattle against its housing.
Signs to look out for
Watch for these signs:
- A ticking or rattling from the engine, often worse on a cold start
- A noise that fades as the engine warms up, or gets louder under load
- A warning light, or the engine running roughly
Low oil and missed oil changes can make chain wear worse, so keep up with your servicing.
