What To Do When Your Engine Warning Light Comes On

30 July 2026 · 5 min read

Solid or flashing?

A solid engine light means the car has found a fault and stored it. It is not always an emergency, but it should be checked within the next few days.

A flashing engine light is more serious. It often means the engine is misfiring, which can quickly damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid heavy acceleration and get the car checked straight away.

What happens when you bring it in

We plug in a diagnostic reader to read the fault code the car has stored. A code tells us where to look, but it is not the answer on its own, so we test the system to find the real cause.

We then give you a clear quote before any work starts. You will know what is wrong, what it will cost and what can wait.

Simple checks you can do first

Before you call, a few quick checks can save time:

  • Check the fuel cap is tight. A loose cap can trigger the light.
  • Check the oil and coolant levels when the engine is cold.
  • Note when the light came on and how the car felt. This helps us find the fault faster.
