When Is My MOT Due?

18 September 2026 · 5 min read

The three-year rule

A brand new car needs its first MOT when it is three years old. After that, it needs a new MOT every year, before the current certificate runs out.

The expiry date on your certificate is the last day you can drive legally. Booking a few weeks early gives us time to fix anything we find, without rushing.

How to check your MOT due date

You can check your MOT due date on the GOV.UK MOT history service using your registration number. It shows the expiry date and your past test results.

Or use the checker below. Enter your registration and it shows your MOT status and due date, so you can see when to book without leaving this page.

What happens if your MOT runs out

Driving without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000, and it can also make your insurance invalid. You can still drive the car to a test you have already booked.

Call us on 01922 682200 or book online and we will fit you in. Most MOTs take about an hour, and we will tell you what the car needs before any work starts.
